Road trips don’t always go as planned. Sometimes the unexpected happens and we need to re-route our course. We have a flat tire and our travel is delayed. We see a road closure ahead and we are forced to find a new way. We have a car accident and our travel is halted. At time like these we must adjust to the new path. The same is true in life. It can, at times, be so messy.
We’re humming along our chosen path and an unplanned event changes our course. Death, illness, loss, unexpected tragedy. Suddenly, we are thrust onto a new path. Pain, confusion, and suffering set in. We are now somewhere we don’t want to be and certainly wouldn’t have planned to go.
How did this happen and why? Will things ever be okay again? At times like these we need something bigger than ourselves to help us through thee unplanned part of the journey. So we turn to many things knowingly or unknowingly. ……alcohol, drugs, food, shopping, work, money, sex, relationships, entertainment, etc.; yet, we still can’t shake this suffering and the void in our heart and soul. It is at times like these we need each other. We need community. Yet, at these most painful times, we often do the opposite. Isolate and hide our pain behind our plastic smiles. At least, at times in my life, I know I and many of my clients have hidden our pain.
But hiding doesn't help. It hurts. And we can't hide from God because. during all these detours, the eternal void filler patiently waits. He desires to heal and bless us. He sits waiting with open arms. All we need to do is believe and ask.
In fact, we are told in Psalm 147.3 “God heals the brokenhearted and binds up all their wounds”. We are also told in 1st Peter 5.6-7, “Humble yourselves; therefore, under the mighty hand of God so at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you”
Again, all we need to do is ask him and he will do immeasurably more with our pain filled road then we can ever imagine because he loves us, cares for us, created us. Have a pain filled road today? Try him out and see what he has in store for your comfort and your future. He patiently waits.
